How much are they?

30 September 2008

…the Polish tastebuds, that is:

…a couple of shelves at Sainsbury’s

…the sweets (a 220-230g pack of Mieszko’s Michaszki or Trufle: 99p – a rather good price)

Pickled cucumbers – twice as much as the indigenous version…
No, impossible to spend so much money on something that used to be a vegetable! And on quite a lot of vinegar…

Buzzwords, September’08

27 September 2008

…and buzzphrases.

It has always been huge fun – to listen to new fashions in speeches, chats and disputes. For a person who came back after nine months only – this particular time sounds simply delicious.

Only some of the ‘new arrivals’ – the most ubiquitous ones – were taken down yesterday morning. For posterity…

Bailing out.
When chips are down.
Slippery slope to socialism.
Credit crunch Monday.
It is not the time for a novice.
Kiss of life, kiss of wife.
Credit crunch vegetables.
Serves them right.
False economy.
DIY haircuts.
Bailout packages; details not disclosed.
Money with no strings attached.
Let’s try very hard to be optimistic.
Will the central banks’ intervention work (longer than for a while)?
Even the Palace is feeling the pinch.

And so forth…

Fortunate to be young enough…

When learning it first, all those years ago, I was really and truly impressed: you need to be 21 to legally buy alcohol in this country. Wow!

But how does it come about – all that Brirish underage drinking?… binge drinking?…
Seemingly even a bit worse, than in my country.

Does it make any sense to put such a stress* on those age limits, nobody is complying with?

*in supermarkets, winestores, pubs…

Chopin? – it clicks!

Glorious Sunday. A Pole, walking home from Millbank area, sees this:

In a Grade 2 listed church, St. Gabriel’s, Warwick Square.

So she enters the church (the service just finished), suprised a bit, because it is her first visit inside (and she used to work nearby for a couple of months).
The interior is what one would expect from a building constructed in 1853 (by architect Thomas Cundy).

Laeflet says, that The Chopin Society Summer International Piano Festival is nearly over. And Nikolai Demidenko is a local here…

Schadenfreude

21 September 2008

Seen in Pimlico earlier today:

Why schadenfreude? Because just before leaving for London I was informed in Kraków, that many boroughs would be – from now on – collecting all the paper, glass, plastic and metal mixed together. And the professionals will sort things out.

I got really furious. Beause recycling has been with us for at least 15-20 years (paid paper and metals – much longer). So why such downgrading now, when the people are getting used to it more and more?!… When they just start feeling it fashionable, a bit snobbish?

So the Pimlico picture is a bit comforting. Just a bit…
